Real Madrid welcome scrapping of FIFA's World Cup investor plan

Madrid: Spanish giants Real Madrid on Sunday welcomed FIFA's decision to scrap their controversial plan to allow private investment in the World Cup. macnevers-and-co.beer

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino was forced into a humiliating climbdown on Friday after strong backlash against the idea from European football governing body UEFA and several other confederations.

"Our club believes this is good news for football, for its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans of our beloved sport," said Los Blancos in a statement.

"Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude to UEFA, to the confederations and federations, and to all the institutions that firmly and responsibly opposed this project.

"Their unity and sense of duty have protected football at a decisive moment."

Madrid, who were a founding member of the failed breakaway European Super League project, said in February 2026 they had come to an agreement with UEFA for the good of European club football, ending years of strained relations between the two parties.

On Tuesday FIFA announced plans to create a commercial subsidiary to run its biggest events, including the World Cup and Club World Cup, with this body open to private investment which Infantino said could raise $4.2 billion.

UEFA led opposition to FIFA's plan, saying they would boycott all FIFA competitions and had lost confidence in Infantino, who has come under heavy pressure in recent days.

وقال يويفا، في بيان إن مقترح الاتحاد الدولي قوبل بالرفض بالإجماع من الاتحادات الوطنية الأعضاء في الاتحاد الأوروبي، إلى جانب عدد من الاتحادات الأخرى حول العالم، مشيرا إلى أن مهمتها تتمثل في حماية كرة القدم والحفاظ على مصالحها.

وأوضح الاتحاد القاري أنه سيبدأ العمل فورا مع الشركاء وأصحاب المصلحة في مختلف أنحاء العالم وعلى جميع مستويات اللعبة، من أجل اقتراح آلية جديدة لتوزيع الموارد.

ويأتي موقف الاتحاد الأوروبي في أعقاب قرار فيفاالتراجع عن المشروع، بعد انتقادات مماثلة من الاتحاد الآسيوي لكرة القدم، فيما أبدت اتحادات أخرى تحفظاتها حيال المقترح.

وأعلن رئيس الفيفا السويسري جياني إنفانتينو في بيان اليوم السبت، التراجع عن مشروع فتح الهيئة الكروية الأعلى في العالم أمام مستثمرين من القطاع الخاص، بعد موجة من الانتقادات والمخاوف من تحويل كرة القدم إلى سلعة، وسط تساؤلات بشأن احتمال وجود تضارب في المصالح.

وقال إنفانتينو: بعد الاستماع بعناية إلى جميع وجهات النظر، أصبح من الواضح أن المشروع أحدث انقسامات لم تعد تخدم الهدف الأساسي الذي أُطلق من أجله.

ويأتي تراجع إنفانتينو في وقت يواجه فيه فيفا ضغوطا إضافية، عقب الاستقالة الأخيرة لكبير مستشاريه كارلوس كورديرو.

وكان فيفا قد كشف، الثلاثاء الماضي، بشكل مفاجئ، عن خطة تهدف إلى زيادة تمويل تطوير كرة القدم إلى 10 مليارات دولار أمريكي خلال الأعوام الأربعة المقبلة، إلا أن الخطة قوبلت بانتقادات واسعة، بسبب مضمونها وآلية طرحها.

UEFA has declared that it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino despite the decision to abandon plans to sell a stake in the World Cup’s commercial operations.

European football’s governing body issued its latest rebuke on Saturday, hours after FIFA cancelled the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise project.

The statement deepens the crisis surrounding Infantino’s leadership but does not represent a formal FIFA vote of no confidence or automatically remove him from office.

UEFA has not announced whether its 55 member associations will seek an extraordinary FIFA Congress to consider his dismissal.

Under FIFA’s statutes, 20% of its 211 national associations must request an extraordinary Congress. That means 43 countries could initiate the process and seek to place a no-confidence vote on the agenda.

UEFA alone has enough members to meet that threshold if its associations act collectively.

Prior to UEFA’s statement, Infantino had walked back the idea to sell stakes in the World Cup’s commercial operations. “Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions,” he said.

The current FIFA president said he intended to reunite the different parties and continue increasing development funding, particularly for countries requiring greater support.

The proposal would have created a subsidiary valued at approximately $20 billion to oversee FIFA’s competitions and associated commercial operations.

FIFA planned to sell about 20% of that company to external investors, raising up to $4.2 billion. Thrive Eternal, an investment vehicle linked to Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital, was expected to lead the investor group.

FIFA had also told national associations they could receive up to $40 million in funding if they supported the plan by September 19.

However, UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation opposed the proposal. Together, the three confederations represent 143 of FIFA’s 211 associations.

UEFA’s members had unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA competitions while the proposal remained active. The European body demanded both its complete withdrawal and binding assurances that FIFA would never open its competitions or governance to private ownership.

Doha: The General Assembly of the Arab Union for Camel Racing has re-elected Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Kuwari as president of the Union and chairman of the Board of Directors by acclamation.

This came during the Assembly's virtual meeting, which was convened with the participation of representatives of 13 full-member national entities out of 16.

The Assembly approved amendments to the Union's bylaws, including restructuring its governance structure and responsibilities, adopting the title "Board of Directors" instead of previous organizational designations, strengthening the autonomy of member federations, and limiting the scope of the Union's regulations to championships and events organized or sanctioned by the Union.

The Assembly further approved amendments regulating the Union's relations with external entities, adopting CAS arbitration for disputes within its jurisdiction, and advancing emerging sports disciplines related to camel racing.

In addition, the Assembly announced that all candidates were unanimously elected, as each position had only one nominee. Union President Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Kuwari appointed Dr Hazem Almqareh as secretary-general and executive director, and Hadef Mohammed Hamad Al Marri as treasurer.

The Assembly unanimously approved Syria's membership in the Union, while deciding to hold its next General Assembly meeting in Qatar on the sidelines of the HH the Amir Camel Race in late April or early May 2027.

President of the Arab Union for Camel Races (Al Mahari) Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Kuwari expressed his pride in the confidence placed in him by the Assembly after being unanimously retained as president of the Union.

He pointed out that this re-election serves as a catalyst for advancing the Union's work, elevating its efficiency, expanding Arab participation, supporting tournaments and activities that bring together members, and unlocking greater opportunities for young people and those interested in camel sports.
