ALG : Amoura officiellement prêté

C’est désormais officiel : l’international algérien Mohamed Amine Amoura quitte le VfL Wolfsburg pour rejoindre l’OGC Nice sous la forme d’un prêt, assorti d’une option d’achat fixée à 20 millions d’euros. Le transfert intervient après la relégation du club allemand en Bundesliga 2 au terme de l’exercice 2025-2026. Arrivé à Wolfsburg à l’été 2024 en provenance de l’Union Saint-Gilloise, l’attaquant de 24 ans s’est rapidement distingué par son efficacité et sa capacité à peser sur les défenses adverses.

En deux saisons, il a disputé 64 rencontres toutes compétitions confondues, inscrivant 18 buts et délivrant 13 passes décisives. Formé en Algérie et originaire de Jijel, Amoura va ainsi découvrir un nouveau championnat européen après la Belgique et l’Allemagne. Taking inspiration from the Stormers’ Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry performance last month, star No 8 Evan Roos has promised the team are not there to lose next season, reports DEVIN HERMANUS.

The 26-year-old was speaking at the Stormers’ season launch event and new home and away jerseys unveiling on Tuesday.

He last played against the All Blacks three weeks ago at Cape Town Stadium, where John Dobson’s men held New Zealand to 14-14 before going down 38-21.

“It’s a funny one; it was the middle of pre-season and there was nothing to play for except the win. It wasn’t a league game, quarter-final, semi-final or final,” said Roos, who’s preparing for the Stormers’ 25 September Vodacom URC opener against Connacht, and ahead of a pre-season clash with the Bulls in Paarl next Friday.

“At half-time, I saw the All Blacks were surprised, a bit wide-eyed. I think if it wasn’t for our two scrumhalves [Imad Khan and Dewaldt Duvenage] picking up injuries, we might have pulled it through. I think the result would have been different.

“That just shows you what this club means to us as a team, how special it is and what we’re capable of. I’m happy I have that, and I’ll take it into the next season.”

Roos starred in the URC and Investec Champions Cup last season, playing 22 matches, starting 21, scoring 14 tries and racking up 1,593 minutes and finishing the full 80 in 14 of those games.

“We had a great start,” he said, referencing a run of 10 successive wins in all competitions before a mid-season wobble of three successive derby defeats, plus a shock home loss to Connacht in the race to the final eight that cost the Capetonians a home semi-final in the URC.

“The one promise I can make is that every time this team puts on a Stormers jersey, we’re not there to lose. We’re there to compete and get as far as we can.

“This pre-season has been good. We know exactly what we’re really good at. We wanted to build on what we worked on last year,” the nine-cap Springbok added.

“We play every season to win the league, so that’s nothing new. Personally, my goal is just to keep on enjoying it. I think that worked out well last season, so I’ll stick with that.”

The dust may have settled on the Springboks’ hard-fought 33-26 victory over the All Blacks at Cape Town Stadium, but the off-field battle surrounding the scrum is still heating up.

Following the clash, All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie reignited debates around the legitimacy of South Africa’s scrum technique when he implied that the Springboks were manipulating the set-piece by “walking around” the mark to bore straight through the New Zealand tighthead.

In response, an angry Rassie Erasmus pointed to the opposition’s negative play, accusing the All Blacks of taking a non-engagement approach to intentionally collapse or avoid pushing, thereby denying South Africa their traditional platform.

Springboks continue to address scrum drama

Now, in what was a clear strategy on Tuesday, the Springboks ensured it was scrum coach Daan Human who turned up for the press conference.

With the Springbok scrummaging being at the centre of the media attention this week, Human refused to be drawn into suggestions that they were frustrated about the manner in which the scrums were refereed last week and he dismissed suggestions that the Boks have been doing anything untoward in the vital set piece.

“Referees need to understand what’s happening in the scrum and they all have a lot of experience,” said Human.

“I actually thought Angus Gardner was very consistent in his decisions last Saturday. What he called for us, he called for them. It was the same story.

“I have respect for him and I’m not going to question his decisions, but also that’s in the past now. This weekend we need to adapt to how the new referee sees it, and if he tells us to fix something we’ll fix it. But I genuinely don’t think Angus refereed differently to how he normally does.”

Clear message

Asked about the suggestion that the Boks walk around in the scrum, the former Bok prop said: “I can assure you, I have never coached that. We want to go forward, not walk around. Walking around is not ideal for us because it doesn’t give us forward momentum, which is what we want.

“We’re not perfect and things can happen, but if we see something that can be done better, we try to fix it at the very next scrum.

“The scrum is a very important part of our team. It’s part of our culture and this country. There may be different opinions, but it’s not always easy to understand what’s really happening inside a scrum.”

With another big Test between the rugby rivals only a few days away, Human said the focus in the Bok camp was driven by what they want to achieve on the field this weekend.

“Honestly, 80% to 90% percent of our concentration and work is focused on ourselves, and getting better,” said Human.

“We need to acknowledge that they (the All Blacks) have very good backs and a strong pack of forwards. But for us, it’s about improving, not just for this game but going forward.”

This Saturday’s match at FNB Stadium kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
