La rumba congolaise, inscrite au patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité par l’Unesco en 2021, continue de faire vibrer bien au-delà des frontières de la République démocratique du Congo. Dans la diaspora en France et en Belgique, une nouvelle génération d’artistes et de créateurs fait résonner cet héritage musical pour le faire évoluer en y mêlant ses propres influences et son époque. Reportage sur ces jeunes qui font de la rumba un art en mouvement, par Tom Schneider.
OPINION: Success at UJ Stadium could offer alternate blueprint for Lions
The successful turnout and atmosphere at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Stadium during the Lions’ Currie Cup match against the Bulls on the weekend could be built on, rather than complicating matters as some believe.
The Lions played their third-round match at the university grounds in the relatively quiet suburb of Westdene after drawing fewer than 1,000 spectators to the 62,000-capacity Ellis Park for their victory over the Pumas the previous week, despite tickets costing just R40. sweetbonanza.qpon
The decision proved an overwhelming success, with the Lions confirming just under 4,000 spectators in attendance. This despite the match being played on a cold winter afternoon at a new venue.
The players embraced the occasion too, running in six tries to beat the Bulls with a bonus point.
The plan, however, remains to host their next home Currie Cup match against Boland at Wits Stadium before moving all foreseeable home fixtures back to Ellis Park.

Ellis Park deemed unsafe
Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli said before the move that he expected the games at UJ and Wits to be “an overwhelming success”. If they were, the union would use them to bolster its efforts to attract those audiences – particularly students – to Ellis Park through strategic marketing and collaborations.
“Ellis Park will always be the home of the Lions,” he said.
Failure to attract crowds to the crime-affected inner-city stadium has long been a problem for the Joburg union. It has gone to great lengths to clean up the area and improve safety, but many supporters still feel uneasy travelling to and parking in the precinct.
Lions could try both, for now
The game at UJ was a success, and you would expect a similar outcome when the Lions play Boland at Wits.
Some argue that is all the more reason to move all the Lions’ Currie Cup and United Rugby Championship matches to venues like those.
But why not do both? At least for now.
If Straeuli and the Lions board want to enjoy the benefits of bigger crowds at UJ and Wits from time to time, why not target those venues for selected fixtures?
At the same time, they can continue building support for Ellis Park through the marketing and collaborations Straeuli spoke about.
It doesn’t have to be one or the other. The Lions can capitalise on what worked at UJ without giving up on their traditional home.
Équipe d’Algérie : La FAF officialise le départ de Petkovic
Comme indiqué dimanche par nos soins, la Fédération Algérienne de Football (FAF) a annoncé, ce lundi 3 août 2026, la fin de sa collaboration avec son désormais ex-sélectionneur, Vladimir Petkovic, ainsi qu’avec l’ensemble de son staff technique.
Dans un communiqué officiel, la FAF précise que « la relation contractuelle la liant au sélectionneur national, M. Vladimir Petkovic, ainsi qu’à son staff technique, a officiellement pris fin ce jour, d’un commun accord ».
Arrivé à la tête de la sélection nationale il y a vingt-neuf mois, Vladimir Petkovic aura dirigé les Verts durant une période marquée notamment par la qualification de l’Algérie à la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 2026.
La Fédération a tenu à saluer le professionnalisme, l’engagement et le dévouement du technicien bosnien et de ses assistants tout au long de leur mission à la tête de l’équipe nationale.
En conclusion de son communiqué, la FAF leur a adressé ses sincères remerciements pour le travail accompli et leur a souhaité plein succès dans la poursuite de leur carrière professionnelle.

Schools rugby incidents investigated
The Gauteng and Western Cape education departments are investigating separate incidents that led to two schools rugby matches being abandoned over the weekend.
A Northvaal Cup clash between Menlopark and EG Jansen in Pretoria was called off after a brawl involving EG Jansen players and Menlopark old boys. Parents also reportedly got involved.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile condemned the incident.
“Violence has no place in our schools or on our sporting fields,” Maile told News24. “Every learner has the right to participate in sport in an environment that is safe, respectful and free from intimidation.”
He added that the department was gathering reports from the schools and other stakeholders before deciding whether further action was required.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Department of Education is investigating an alleged racist incident that brought an end to a derby between Fairmont High School and The Settlers High School in Cape Town.
The match official was heard over the referee communication system alleging that the K-word had been used during the game.
“Racism has no place in any school environment,” Western Cape education department communications director Bronagh Hammond told News24.
She said both schools were following the necessary processes while the department reviewed available video footage.

“The department will provide any necessary support to those involved, including counselling services where required.
