Another round of matches has concluded in the ongoing Women’s Hundred. But apart from Deepti Sharma ending her wicketless drought, none of the Indian players managed a match-winning performance for their respective teams.

First, on August 3, Jemimah Rodrigues was in action for Southern Brave against Welsh Fire in Southampton. She scored 25 off 21 balls, looking fluent during her stay, but failed to convert her start into a significant knock. Her 49-run partnership with Laura Wolvaardt proved crucial in rebuilding the innings after two early wickets, helping Southern Brave post 121/5. On August 4, veteran all-rounder Deepti featured for Sunrisers Leeds against London Spirit in Leeds. Playing against her former team, the biggest positive was that she finally returned among the wickets. After three consecutive wicketless outings, Deepti picked up two wickets while producing an economical spell, conceding just 18 runs from her 20 balls. However, during Sunrisers’ successful chase of 137, she was sent in at number six and managed only six runs from seven deliveries.

Then, in Manchester Super Giants’ clash against Welsh Fire in Southampton, both Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh endured disappointing outings as their side suffered a three-wicket defeat.

Batting first, the Super Giants suffered a collapse and could manage only 85/9. Mandhana scored 15 off 17 balls before being run out. She started brightly, hitting a six off Grace Potts, but then struggled to score freely. Her issues against left-arm orthodox spin have once again come into focus. After struggling to Samantha Bates (Trent Rockets), Kirstie Gordon (MI London) and now Sophia Smale (Welsh Fire), Mandhana looked scratchy against that style of bowling.

For Richa, the poor run with the bat continued. She had another opportunity but failed to capitalise. However, questions were raised over the timing of her arrival at the crease. In the previous four matches, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter had batted twice at number five and once each at number three and number four. In this game, however, she was surprisingly sent in at Number eight, even after Sophie Ecclestone.

Despite arriving late, there were still 46 balls left in the innings, giving Richa enough time to play a substantial knock. She even received a lifeline when Grace Thompson dropped a regulation catch. However, she could not make the most of it and was eventually dismissed for 11 off 19 balls.

India's pace-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, 34, is keen to excel in the upcoming domestic season to impress national selectors ahead of India’s away Test series against New Zealand in November. Thakur, who has 33 scalps in 13 Tests so far, played his last Test against England, scoring 41 at Manchester in July 2025.

“As long as I play cricket, my goal will always be to play for India. I’m not in the Indian team currently, but I’m definitely preparing to make a comeback. I have no other option but to perform. Given my experience, if I perform well, I feel the selectors or the team management will consider me. I don’t need to prove that I can play international cricket well, that’s already been done. So, now it’s just about how well I perform and how many matches I can help my team win,” Thakur told mid-day during an exclusive chat at his residence in Powai recently.

Duleep Trophy from Aug 23

Thakur, who has also played 47 ODIs and 25 T20Is, claiming 65 and 33 wickets respectively, insists that the upcoming domestic season, starting with the Duleep Trophy on August 23 in Bengaluru, is crucial for him. He will be representing the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led West Zone team.

“Our [2026-27] season begins with the Duleep Trophy. Since it’s a knockout game, I can’t say how many chances I’ll get, but even if I get one match, I’ll try to give more than my 100 per cent. Then, there are some other important domestic invitational tournaments in September, followed by the Ranji Trophy. So, all upcoming matches are important. I’ll have to play these matches with a get-set-go attitude because the Indian team touring New Zealand in November will need an all-rounder at the No. 8 position. I want to explore that opportunity, so a strong, positive attitude is important for all upcoming games,” Thakur said.

The Thakur-led Mumbai team lost to Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final last season, and the attacking all-rounder said a complete team effort will be needed to emerge triumphant again.

Eyeing another Ranji title

“Winning Ranji Trophy is in everyone’s hands — players, coaches, trainers, physios, doctors, team managers, those outside the playing XI and also our MCA [Mumbai Cricket Association] management. Everyone’s contribution is important. Only then can you win a championship. I entered the Mumbai team [in 2012] and against all odds, cemented my place. As a senior player, my job is to share my experiences with the players, and I do that, whether or not I’m the captain. As captain, of course, I want to lift the Ranji Trophy, but before that, I must think about how I can help my bowlers pick up five-wicket hauls,” Thakur explained.

Buttler surpassed former West Indies and Mumbai Indians all-rounder Kieron Pollard to become the highest run-scorer in the history of T20 cricket. The Manchester Super Giants captain smashed 51 not out in 20 balls with six sixes and 2 fours while New Zealand’s Tim Siefert chipped in with 62 not out on 36 balls with 10 fours in a nine-wicket win over Welsh Fire.

Buttler has smashed 9 centuries in T20 cricket and 7 of those have come in Indian Premier League. The 35-year-old England star was retained for Rs 15.75 crore by Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2026 season.

H scored 526 runs in 17 matches for GT in IPL 2026 with 4 fifties and a strike-rate of 152.46 en route to reaching the final. In the Hundred 2026 season so far, Buttler has scored 277 runs in six matches at a strike-rate of 178.7 with 4 fifties.

“Yeah it’s really cool actually to think you’ve got the most T20 runs out of everyone (on becoming the leading run-scorer in T20 cricket, going past Pollard). Someone will surpass it one day and his name’s probably Sooryavanshi,” Buttler was quoted as saying by Sky Sports after achieving the record.

Manchester [UK], August 6 (ANI): England star Jos Buttler, who surpassed West Indies legend Kieron Pollard to become the leading run-getter in T20 history on Wednesday, backed the teen Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to surpass the record one day.

Buttler climbed the summit of T20 cricket during his side Manchester Super Giants (MSG) match against Welsh Fire in the Men’s Hundred, scoring a quickfire 51* in 20 balls, with two fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 250.00.

In 522 T20s, Buttler has now scored 14,833 runs with nine centuries and 105 fifties, outdoing Pollard (14,803 runs in 746 matches with two centuries) and a long-time record-holding West Indies titan Chris Gayle (14,562 runs in 463 matches with 22 centuries and 88 fifties).

After setting the record, Buttler, as per Cricinfo quoting Sky Sports, said he was proud to become the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket but said that the record would eventually be broken, adding that the likely person to surpass it could be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

“It’s really cool, actually, to think you’ve got the most T20 runs out of anyone. Someone will surpass it one day – and his name’s probably [Vaibhav] Sooryavanshi – but it’s a proud moment," Buttler told Sky Sports as per Cricinfo.

At just 15, Sooryavanshi enjoyed a remarkable run in T20I cricket, scoring 151 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe to claim his maiden Player of the Series award as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep. His success came on the back of a stellar ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaign earlier this year, where he amassed 439 runs and was named Player of the Tournament, further highlighting his immense potential.

Buttler said he would have liked to overtake Pollard while playing against MI London with Pollard watching as the head coach, and expressed pride at joining a list of T20 greats.

“We played against MI London last game and it would have been nice to get past Polly while he was there sat in the dugout, but there’s some great names on there, some special players, so I’m really proud of that," Buttler said.

Coming to the Men’s Hundred match, Welsh Fire elected to bat first at Manchester. Knocks from Matt Short (71 in 47 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) and Phil Salt (48 in 37 balls, with three fours and three sixes) steered them to 155/4 in 100 balls.

During the chase, MSG came out all guns blazing, with Tim Seifert (62* in 36 balls, with 10 fours), Paul Walter (37 in 18 balls, with four boundaries) and Buttler (51* in 20 balls, with two fours and six sixes) chasing the total with nine wickets to spare. (ANI)
