Satwik-Chirag’s Road to Redemption Begins at Home World Championships

For Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the road to the 2026 BWF World Championships has been anything but smooth. India’s star men’s doubles pair have shown flashes of their best form this season, but injuries have once again tested their progress.

The former World No. 1 pair did not have the best start to the season, but gradually they found their rhythm. They reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open, finished runners-up in Thailand and then finally ended their two-year title drought by winning the Singapore Open. However, their momentum soon faced a major setback. Satwik’s long-standing shoulder problem returned, which forced the pair to pull out of the Indonesia Open and Japan Open. Chirag has also dealt with a lower-back issue earlier this year, which made their fitness one of the biggest concerns ahead of the World Championships.

However, their coach Tan Kim Her remains confident about their recovery. Speaking to Sportstar, the Malaysian said Satwik has improved significantly during his rehabilitation, while Chirag is now fully fit.

“Satwik is ready now,” Tan said. “The rehab is still there, but he’s getting much, much better. Chirag is fully 100 per cent fit.”

For Tan, the recent results are less important than being ready for the biggest tournaments. He believes the World Championships and the Asian Games are the events that will define the pair’s season. “We cannot win every tournament,” Tan said.

He added, “What is bothering me is the injury. Especially for Satwik, his shoulder… from 2018 he already had a tear. It’s on and off. Hopefully this time he can overcome it.”

Now the bigger question is whether Satwik can quickly regain his competitive rhythm after spending weeks away from tournament badminton. His last tournament ended with a first-round exit in Japan due to his shoulder injury.

“Their confidence was very good after Singapore. But after that they had a break again. Preparation now is good. The important part is confidence and whether he can get the rhythm back or not. That’s very important,” Tan explained.

The World Championships will bring huge pressure as the tournament is being organised in front of a home crowd. Satwik and Chirag have already won two World Championships bronze medals, in 2022 and 2025, and this time they will aim to clinch the title.

Tan believes they have the potential to challenge anyone if they are in the right physical and mental condition. “If Satwik and Chirag are in good form, they can beat anyone,” he said. “But if they are mentally not strong, they can lose to anyone also.”

The draw for the 2026 World Championships has given the Indian pair a first-round bye, but the challenge will get tougher as they progress through the tournament.

After suffering a 29-run defeat in the opening game, the Indian men’s mixed disability cricket team will look to bounce back when they take on England in the second T20I of the seven-match series on Friday, August 7, at the OurCoop County Ground in Derby.

The second match, to be played at the same venue, is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm IST.

In the series opener, England elected to bat first and posted 159/4 from their allotted 20 overs. Chasing 160, India were restricted to 130/9, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series.

Despite the defeat, Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) Secretary General Ravi Kant Chauhan remained optimistic about the team’s chances in the remaining matches.

“In the first match, the team got a good understanding of the conditions here. The biggest achievement is that these players have overcome the challenges of learning disabilities to represent the country. I am confident that in the next match, the Indian team will be seen in full rhythm,” Chauhan said in an exclusive conversation with RevSportz.

He acknowledged that adapting to English conditions had been a challenge after the team arrived from India’s summer conditions just a few days before the series.

“The weather, especially the wind during the first match, was quite different from what the players had prepared for in India. However, they are gradually adjusting to the conditions, and I believe they will perform much better in the remaining six matches,” he added.

Chauhan also highlighted the growing stature of mixed disability cricket globally, revealing that the format had received strong appreciation from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

“Both India and England are sending a strong message to the cricketing world that if more Full Member nations embrace this format, mixed disability cricket can soon find a place on the ICC platform,” Chauhan said.

In earlier conversations with the Indian team officials, it was learnt that there might be a possibility of an exhibition match of mixed disability cricket at the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028.

With six matches still to be played after Friday’s encounter, India will be eager to level the series and build momentum in what promises to be a significant series for the future of the sport.

This year’s edition features 23 teams competing in the two-day five-a-side football championship at Merlin Rise – The Sports Republic, Kolkata’s premier sports-themed township. The participating teams represent leading print, electronic and digital media organisations, reflecting the tournament’s growing popularity among the city’s sports journalists.
