World Athletics U20 Championships: National record holder Pooja Singh headlines 36-member Indian team in Oregon
New Delhi [India], August 5 (ANI): Senior national record holder and reigning Asian champion Pooja Singh will lead India’s challenge at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 as a 36-member track and field contingent gears up to compete at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from August 5 to 9.
According to Olympics.com, the Indian squad comprises 23 men and 13 women and heads into the global showpiece on the back of a historic outing at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong, China, where the country finished second behind China with a record haul of 19 medals, including 10 gold. game-sweetbonanza.com
All eyes will be on the 19-year-old Pooja, who has emerged as one of India’s brightest athletics prospects this season. She clinched the women’s high jump title at the Asian U20 Championships with a clearance of 1.93m, setting a new senior national record and eclipsing the previous mark of 1.92m set by Sahana Kumari in 2012.
Her gold-winning effort also erased the championship record that had stood since 2006 and secured qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she went on to finish eighth in challenging rainy conditions.
Apart from Pooja, Asian U20 champions Nitin Gupta and Shahnavaz Khan will also spearhead India’s medal hopes in Oregon. Nitin claimed the men’s 5000m race walk title at the continental meet, while Shahnavaz struck gold in the men’s long jump.
More than 1,800 athletes representing 147 member federations are expected to compete in Eugene, making the 2026 edition the largest World Athletics U20 Championships in history and surpassing the previous participation record of 1,558 athletes set at Lima in 2024.
India will also look to improve on its performance from the previous edition in Lima, where a 43-member contingent returned with one medal after Aarti won bronze in the women’s 10,000m race walk.
The World Athletics U20 Championships have produced some of Indian athletics’ biggest stars over the years. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra became the country’s first world U20 champion after winning the men’s javelin throw title with a world U20 record of 86.48m at Bydgoszcz in 2016.
Two years later, Hima Das created history by becoming India’s first track world U20 champion with her gold medal in the women’s 400m at Tampere.
India’s squad for Oregon also features athletes across sprints, middle-distance events, jumps, throws, race walk and relay competitions, reflecting the country’s growing depth in junior athletics as it seeks another successful campaign on the world stage.

Women’s Hundred 2026: Sutherland Shines as Sunrisers Leeds Finally Win at Home

Sunrisers Leeds finally registered their first home win of the ongoing Women’s Hundred, defeating London Spirit by five wickets at Headingley.
Chasing 137, the hosts reached the target with two balls to spare, with Annabel Sutherland anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 37 off 21 balls.
Sunrisers had lost both their previous home matches against Southern Brave and Manchester Super Giants. However, this time, despite a mini collapse, they held their nerve to avoid a third successive defeat at Headingley.
Bryony Smith and Phoebe Litchfield gave Sunrisers a flying start with a 57-run opening partnership. However, the hosts then lost three wickets for just two runs, allowing London Spirit to claw their way back into the contest.
Skipper Dani Gibson responded with a valuable 25, adding a crucial 48-run partnership with Sutherland to steady the chase.
Sutherland came into the match on the back of an unbeaten 59 off 30 in the previous game, an effort that ended in a losing cause. This time, she once again stayed till the end, and with Jess Jonassen contributing a quickfire unbeaten 13 off five balls, Sutherland sealed the win in style with a towering six.
Earlier, Sutherland also chipped in with a wicket and was deservedly named Player of the Match.
The unbeaten knock lifted Sutherland to third on the run-scorers’ list this season with 183 runs in five innings at an average of 91.50 and a strike rate of 156.41.
Speaking after the win, a relieved Sutherland said: “We just haven’t quite got over the line in the last few but we felt like we’ve been there and thereabouts. So, it’s nice to get the win.”
The victory lifted Sunrisers Leeds to fourth in the standings. They will next face Birmingham Phoenix in Birmingham on August 7.

CWG 2026 silver medallist Raja Muthupandi urges Tamil Nadu govt to expand weightlifting infrastructure
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 5 (ANI): Commonwealth Games silver medallist Raja Muthupandi has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to establish weightlifting training centres across all districts, saying improved infrastructure will help identify and nurture the next generation of lifters in the state.
The Indian weightlifter, who won silver in the men’s 65kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, also expressed gratitude to his parents, the people of Tamil Nadu and the governments at the Centre and in the state for recognising his achievement.
Speaking after his return to India, Raja said, “I dedicate this silver medal to my parents and the people of Tamil Nadu. The Malaysian lifter, who won the gold medal in his category, was a strong competitor. Union Sports Minister had also hosted the Indian medal winners for a dinner in New Delhi and announced a cash reward of Rs 20 lakh for my silver medal. I am happy that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced a cash incentive of Rs 30 lakh the day after I secured the medal. I appeal to the Tamil Nadu government to establish weightlifting training centres in all districts to help nurture young talent and strengthen the sport across the state."
Raja produced an overall lift of 286kg, comprising 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, to finish second in the men’s 65kg category and secure one of India’s standout medals in Glasgow.
Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamed won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, claiming his third consecutive Commonwealth Games title after earlier triumphs at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
The silver medal marked a remarkable comeback for the 26-year-old, whose career was nearly cut short by a serious elbow ligament injury in 2019. His rehabilitation was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, while the absence of his preferred weight category and stiff domestic competition kept him out of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Raja returned to the national fold following the introduction of the 65kg category and steadily rebuilt his form, highlighted by a ninth-place finish at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships with a personal-best total of 299kg before reaching the Commonwealth Games podium.
His medal was part of another productive campaign for Indian weightlifting at Glasgow 2026. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu won a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 48kg category, while Chanambam Rishikanta Singh also secured silver in the men’s 60kg event.
India ended the 2026 Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the overall medal table with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. Weightlifting contributed eight medals to the tally, comprising one gold, six silver and one bronze. (ANI)
