East Bengal Push Ahead with Ambitious Rebuild Despite Investor Exit

East Bengal have wasted no time in moving on after parting ways with long-time investor Emami, sending a strong message that the club’s ambitions remain firmly intact. The Red and Gold Brigade are preparing to represent India in the AFC Champions League Two (ACL 2) qualifiers against Kuwait’s Al Arabi in August, with preparations for the new season in full swing both on and off the pitch.

The club have turned to Jupiter Wagons, one of the country’s leading private manufacturers of railway freight wagons, as the driving force behind their squad-building process. Emami’s exit raised uncertainty over East Bengal’s immediate future, but Jupiter Wagons stepped in to ensure the club’s footballing plans did not lose momentum.

East Bengal and Jupiter Wagons are no strangers to each other. Murari Lal Lohia, Founder of Jupiter Wagons, is the President of East Bengal Club and has played a vital role in stabilising the club’s team-building process during a crucial phase. The management have been able to continue strengthening the squad despite the change in the investment structure.

The dugout has also been part of the rebuilding process. Following Oscar Bruzon’s departure, East Bengal appointed experienced Spanish coach Antonio Lopez Habas as their new head coach and tasked him with leading the club through a season packed with domestic and continental challenges.

The transfer window has already seen several high-profile arrivals. East Bengal have been strengthened by the signings of goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa; defenders Boris Singh and Sandip Mandi; defensive midfielders Rohit Kumar and Danish Farooq; and foreign recruit Dani Ramirez, one of the standout performers from last season’s Indian Super League (ISL).

But East Bengal’s business is far from complete. The club are in the advanced stages of negotiations with Ayush Chhetri and Rahim Ali, and both deals are progressing positively, although they remain subject to the completion of formalities. Meanwhile, discussions with India international Sandesh Jhingan are still at an early stage, though he remains a priority target for several Indian Super League clubs. The management remain active in the market and are expected to announce more signings over the coming days as they continue to strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The squad are scheduled to begin pre-season training on 12 July, giving Habas very little time to integrate his new signings and implement his ideas before their Derby opener in the Durand Cup and the crucial AFC Champions League Two qualifier. While uncertainty remains over the investor transition, East Bengal continue to build a competitive squad capable of challenging on multiple fronts.
